It’s not about Islam

Letter-writer Vern Huffman presents the same tired rhetoric regarding the reason for ISIS/ISIL terrorism — the West is to blame.

Murder and carnage has been endemic in the Middle East for centuries, long before their was a West. ISIS/ISIL are not “religious conservatives.”

No religious conservatives I know cut people’s heads off.

They are terrorists with a twisted ideology and desire to impose it on the whole world.

These groups kill more Muslims than any one else. Ask the Yazidis or the Sunni or Shia Kurds.

They use chlorine gas on Iraqi soldiers and Shia militia. There is a worldwide anti-ISIS/ISIL coalition of 62 countries, including Arab countries Jordan, Saudi Arabia, UAE, Bahrain Qatari.

A little education is in order.

Cherryl Katnich, Maple Ridge

U.S. is to blame

The last thing Canadians need is U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry coming to Canada to offer “solidarity” to our nation after the attacks on our soldiers.

If anything, the trip will aid radicalization in this country as it demonstrates a high-profile relationship with representatives of a questionable U.S. foreign policy.

Amplifying the two recent tragic incidents is irresponsible. The U.S. should stay out of our domestic affairs.

If Prime Minister Stephen Harper thinks that this trip by Kerry will increase his popularity, he is sadly mistaken.

Robert Fitzpatrick, Sicamous

Cowards, not wolves

Perhaps media of all types could change their description of these loons from “lone wolf” to something more fitting such as “lone sneak-attacking coward.”

Terrorists of all stripes kill from ambush, hide in the shadows and murder the unsuspecting and weak. Yup, “coward” works.

Using the term “wolf” gives too much credit to their acts.

Harry Shardlow, Chilliwack

Terrorists aren’t being good Muslims

As a Muslim, I condemn ISIS for their heinous crimes. I condemn the killing of our soldier in Ottawa, and I condemn any form of injustice, as do the vast majority of Muslims.

I feel it is imperative for Muslims to make this clear. ISIS and other terrorist groups represent no one but their terrorist membership. They do not represent over 1.6 billion Muslims worldwide, inasmuch as the Ku Klux Klan has never represented Christians.

Audil Virk, Breslau, Ont.

Ads are nuts

I am amazed at the number of television ads for prescription drugs. They should not be allowed.

The ads cause patient-consumers to ask their physician to prescribe medication they saw in ads. If the doctor doesn’t do it, the patient can feel that they aren’t being treated properly.

Usually, side effects are mentioned quickly, often warning people not to take the drug if you have kidney problems, diabetes, heart disorders and the list goes on and on, also telling people to go to hospital if they have side effects.

Stop this nonsensical advertising and let’s get back to patients being patients and doctors being doctors.

Give me old Hockey Night in Canada

Because I haven’t been an avid fan of Hockey Night in Canada for some time, my opinion doesn’t matter much. But if I still were, my shout-out would be: “Give me back Ron MacLean and the old format, or pass me the TV remote!”

Lloyd Atkins, Vernon

Salmon movie tells other story

I think Jeremy Dunn of the B.C. Salmon Farmers Association should go see the Pristine Coast movie from the Film Festival which just showed in Vancouver and see the real truth about fish farms and what they are doing to our wild salmon. It’s a little different from what he says in the op-ed he wrote that you just published.

Doug Hayman, North Vancouver

PSA test saves lives

I’ve just read that the Canadian Task Force on Preventive Health Care says that the prostate-specific antigen test is no longer effective as a prostate-screening tool!

I don’t know who made them experts, but let me say that I am alive and kicking because I have had the PSA test since age 45.

From the task forces’ acronym, CTFPHC, please replace the letter P with I for irresponsible, incompetent or better yet, idiotic.

Tony Paone, Port Coquitlam

Green LNG report isn’t scientific

This report questioning the green benefits of LNG was written by the Pembina Institute, a paid advocacy group. The two authors are not even climate scientists, it is merely their opinion. Many of the works they referenced are not peer reviewed papers.

The Pacific Institute for climate Solutions obviously were looking for a report stating that the LNG green benefits were overblown, and they picked and paid an advocacy group to provide it.

The two-degrees warming the article talks about is not a scientific goal, it is a political goal agreed to in Copenhagen in 2009.
